Life with Savannah Cats A1
Life in Savannah Cat Land can be quite challenging if your not prepared. Although the Savannah cats seem to be a normal domestic cat and may appear to be a simple house cat in their features, there are points you still need to take into consideration. These cats are in fact a cross between an Africa Serval and a domesticated house cat. They have many characteristics that set them aside in comparing to the normal house cat. I will address several points I personally have found in the next few articles.
When I purchased my first F1 Savannah kitten, I was very excited to get her home. I didn’t realize I would not be able to take her from her travel crate and just give her a big hug and some lovin’s. I opened the door and she hissed at me, obviously she had no intentions of coming out of her comfort zone in the crate. I opened the door and allowed her to exit under her own terms. After a very long hour wait, she peered out the door to make sure the predators (me) had gone. My beautiful little F1 Savannah kitten bolted from the crate and under the bed as if I had just set her loose in a jungle. This was my first introduction to my lovely “Story girl” Imagine my surprise.
I anxiously awaited her to feel less threatened so i could at least sneak a peek at my new savannah kitten. Finally several hours later I saw 2 little eyes peeking out at me. I quickly offered her a piece of chicken with the thoughts we may be able to make friends. She reached out to snag the chicken allowing me the chance to pick her up. Well, the human hands on her was enough to welcome the chance at a bite and a few scratches, which she did. That was the first time blood was drawn between my new best friend and me.
Luckily, I had done my homework and knew full well this could be the situation and how to handle it, until she calmed down. Over time Story did calm down to a degree. She is still not the typical house cat, but I didn’t buy her for that reason. Nor, should anyone else. Keep in mind, I love this girl and I know not all Savannah kittens will have this attitude, but many will. As long as your prepared as I was, you can deal with it and know just what to do about it.
Story has my complete respect as a half wild animal, just as I have her respect when she knows she must do something she doesn’t want to do. like getting her nails trimmed. It’s mutual and it is a very deep bond.
